What is the most effective way to step into your vision and contribute to the world with your unique talents?
I spent a long time studying that question through adult learning theory, neuroscience, women’s leadership research, mentoring, focus groups, and insight from coaching women from diverse cultures, professional backgrounds, and aspirations. There are many ideas I would like to share, and I will share in my future articles, but before you move to action let’s talk about something that all brilliant clients I’ve coached have in common.
Let’s talk about the SHINE Mindset.
The SHINE Mindset is simply the belief that we have unlimited growth potential throughout our adult life. It consists of principles that help us achieve our highest aspirations, whether at work, in relationships or other aspects of life.
The best part is that you develop your SHINE Mindset through an ongoing dedication to practice. It takes a lot of inner work and occasional discomfort.
For example, you know that you shy away from challenges because it makes you psychologically unsafe. Who wants to be humiliated or feel embarrassed, right? But, as you recognise your fears, you learn to tap into your greatness and find your way to embrace a new challenge. You expose yourself to the new experiences that will inform your next steps and motivate you to explore more and work even harder toward achieving your aspiration.
Over time, you will develop a new identity on your journey toward creating the life you desire.
The truth is without goals, you’ll flop along and get nothing done. But remember that without shifting your mindset, you will hardly achieve any goals.
How do you develop the SHINE Mindset?
You can gradually develop this mindset by commanding your brain’s forgotten part that prefers to hide. I talk about the part of you that maybe you are not even fully aware exists. It may hum quietly in the background of your day, softly self-sabotaging, gently pulling you away from your dreams with elegant excuses and procrastination.
To develop the SHINE Mindset, you need to work on the interconnected SHINE Mindset principles, continuously and consciously. There is no end to this process, as your perspective keeps evolving.
Here is the summary of the 10 SHINE Mindset principles:
Those who have dared to dream, and believed in the possibilities presented by these dreams, have impacted the most remarkable changes in the world. Surely you need to put in the work to make your dream a reality, but remember, what and where you are right now, doesn’t define your final destination. In essence, dare to dream big.
2. Know Your Priority Values
Many people don’t know their highest values, and no two people have the same hierarchy of values. Your happiness is tightly linked to how congruent you live with your values. The higher something is on your list of values, the more you will tend to be inspired intrinsically from within to act upon it.
3. See Yourself In Strengths
You have a unique combination of your skills, talents, knowledge and experience. Be intentional about knowing your value and strengths. This self-discovery will give you inspiration and motivation to step into your vision.
4. Accept Imperfections
Remember that your imperfections also make you special. Everyone has development areas, but don’t forget that your greatest room for growth is in the area of your most significant strengths. So, accept your imperfections and pay attention to your words and thoughts. Use them to empower, not disempower yourself.
5. Be Your Own Best Friend
You are unique and valuable, not because someone else says so, but because you have chosen to believe it. Your true friends will show up to support you as you build the life you want for yourself, but you will need to be your own best friend at every step along the way. Tap into your wisdom and learn to trust your inner mentor.
6. Filter Criticism
When you find validation internally, you will also depend less on the opinion of others. Turn criticism around to make it less about you, more about someone’s expectations of you. Filtering criticism might be one of the more challenging tasks, as you need to understand your need to be liked or approved by others. As you will always have someone to criticise you, particularly as you start to shine, this is one of the principles you must practice daily.
7. Cultivate Courage
You don’t achieve your dreams by playing it safe. Exposing yourself to new experiences may be psychologically uncomfortable, but it is a necessary step in actively pursuing success. The only way to reshape your leadership identity is to courageously embrace the challenge of doing what you haven’t done before.
8. Value The Process (Over The End Result)
When you begin to pay attention to the process and focus on building stepping stones toward achieving your dream, you will enjoy the process. Consequently, you will engage more deeply with the present, awaken your greatness through practising new behaviours, and the result will follow. Therefore, focus on the process over the end result.
9. Inspire Others To Support Your Vision
By continuously seeking to enhance every area of your life, deepening self-insight and investing in personal growth, you will become a guide for others. Connect and collaborate with people who support your bold vision—the more courageous your vision, the bigger chance that others will want to become part of it. Deep down, people seek to be connected to a more significant cause and contribute to making the world a better place.
10. Contribute To The Better World
Elevate your vision to be about the lives you touch. Find your way to benefit humanity. The world desperately needs your talent and courageous action.
The SHINE Mindset is about asking yourself the more profound questions; not about where you want to be in a year, but who you’re scared of being now. It challenges you to define what you’re afraid of losing along the way and how much you’re willing to surrender to the unknown.
